Fireworks in Peterborough as Stars go top

As far as top of the table clashes go, the weekend’s match between the Stars and the Phantoms had everything you could want from such an event. There were penalties, a few scraps and plenty of goals to go around.

9th November 2017    Match

Peterborough Phantoms v Oxford City Stars
Sunday 5th November 2017

The first period saw Oxford open the scoring for the evening with an even-handed goal curtsey of Kamil Kinkor, with an assist from Jake Florey – this first goal coming within just the first 3 minutes of the game. Following this was a spot of 4-on-4 hockey as Josh Florey received a 2 minute minor penalty for high-sticking, sitting with him in the box was Peterborough’s Barlow for roughing. With chances from both teams during this time, it’s not until both teams return to full strength that the scores strike again to score their 2nd of the night and their last goal for the period. This goal coming from Matt Lawday with the assist from Darren Elliott. The remainder of the opening section consisted of nothing more than penalties for Oxford’s Andy Cox and Peterborough’s Wallis; neither of these resulting in powerplay goals.

The second period was filled with all kinds of drama. It opened with an unbelievable save by Daniel Lane, who was between the pipes for Peterborough, on a well-placed, close range shot from Elliott. The Stars went on to score their third and fourth goals within 30 seconds. They were scored by Mike Whillock and Josh Oliver respectively. The assist on the 3rd goal came from Josh Florey and a double assist on the 4th goal from Conor Redmond and Stewart Tait. The Stars 4 goal buffer became that little bit narrower with the Phantoms scoring their first goal, James Pentecost from brothers Conor and Nathan Pollard. The second period then followed a pattern of taking turns to score goals. Oxford scored their 5th and 6th goals in alternation with Peterborough scoring their 2nd and 3rd goals. Goal scores for the Stars were Dax Hedges and Darren Elliott with a contender for ‘goal of the season’. Alex Staples with an assist on both goals and Hedges assisting the 6th goal. Both of Peterborough’s goals were scored on the powerplay by Bradley Moore and Kenneth Bavin.

A little before the end of the period there was a tad of a scrap in the Oxford defensive zone. Gloves, sticks and helmets scattered across the ice as a couple of players went toe-to-toe. A couple of penalties were awarded to both sides as a result of the pushing, shoving and fist throwing.

In the final period only one goal was scored. Oxford scored their 7th and final goal of the night, Josh Oliver’s second of the night with the same set up as his first goal as the assist came from Conor Redmond and Stewart Tait. A couple of minor penalties were sat and a 10 minute personal misconduct penalty for Oxford’s Andrew Shurmer.

In conclusion, 10 goals were scored in total, in which Oxford took the victory with a 7-3 defeat over the hosting team. Their win saw them walk away with the 2 points they needed to take the top of the league spot away from the Phantoms and take the pole position for themselves.
