Hopkins And Staples Extend Stars Stay

Popular D-Men Dominic Hopkins and Alex Staples have signed for another season with the Oxford City Stars.

The defencemen formed a mean partnership at the back last season to help the Stars win the league and cup double.

Hopkins, 37, who was voted Supporters’ Player of the Year last season and is an influential figure in the squad, put pen to paper on a new contract to keep him at Oxpens for a third season.

The Assistant Captain weighed in with 16 goals and 28 assists from the back in last season’s campaign and is widely considered to be one of the best British D Men in NIHL 2.

Staples, 28, re-signed for his second season with the Stars after making an immediate impression last season after joining from Chelmsford Chieftains. He stepped up as Captain after an injury kept Darren Elliott out of action for part of last season.

Head Coach Kenny Redmond said: “Securing Dom and Alex is excellent news for the Stars. They’re both great players and were extremely consistent for us last season.

“Dom has had a great career and his experience is a real asset to us as we look to develop more younger players. He is a strong offensive defenceman and weighed with a lot of points last season.

“Alex settled into Oxford very quickly and leads by example on and off the ice. He stepped up as Captain with great class when Darren was injured last season and it’s important we have leaders across the squad.

“They’re both great players, are characters, and have the right attitude. There was plenty of interest in them both from other clubs, so I’m delighted to have re-signed them.”

Dom said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at the Stars, it’s a great club with a special spirit and we’re getting stronger every year.

“Last season was special with the success we had on the ice and the team spirit was fantastic. It was great playing in front of good crowds, the fans were fantastic and I’m really looking forward to the new campaign.

“The club is in good shape and I think with the vision the Board has we can keep building.”

Alex said: “I really enjoyed my first season at Oxford, it’s a really professional set up and I settled in very quickly.

“The guys have been great and there’s a great atmosphere around the club and a real sense of progression.

“I had no hesitation in re-signing and I’m looking forward to the new season. We’ll be there to be shot at after last season, but we’re relishing the challenge.”
