Pekarik’s surprise for fans

18th May 2016    News

Oxford City Stars dropped a surprise on their fans by unveiling and signing Ondrej Pekarik in front of their eyes.  The 6ft 3 Czech Star who played in the City last season put pen to paper at the Oxford City Stars fans forum on Wednesday 18th May.  Pekarik racked up 19 goals last season in his first season in Oxford and many in the Ice Hockey world expected the skilful centre to sign elsewhere.  Ondrej however is wanting to repay Oxford fans for supporting him and is excited for an even better 2nd year at Oxpens Road.  “When I came to Oxford I was not fit, as the season went on my fitness got better and I started to play as I know I can.  The fans here are great, the club have been great and I want to stay in the beautiful city of Oxford”

Stars Coach Simon Anderson “Getting Ondrej to return was a top priority for me.  I think you could see after a slow start last season, that Ondrej was getting better week after week. He plays a good 2-way game and is a team-first guy. Signing Ondrej shows the rest of the league that we mean business next season and I really believe a 100% fit Ondrej Pekarik, has the ability to be one of the, if not the best player in this league.” He added “We will obviously be looking for Ondrej to lead us offensively and he certainly has that capability, as we saw at the tail end of last season. I cannot wait to see him back in that Stars jersey.”

Pekarik was the target of many British teams after his performances in the second half of the season, most notably his outstanding display in the home leg of the Play-off quarter final vs Streatham, where he arguably played out one of the best performances seen at Oxpens Road in recent memory.  The big Czech forward has been enjoying life in Oxford since the end of the Ice Hockey season, taking in Oxford United’s promotion party vs Wycome as part of his integration to the City. Ondrej beamed “I loved that so many fans singing yellows yellows – I would love to see more of them in the Ice Rink to see us, they are crazy and so loud – I love the Yellows!”
