Stars Hit Back To Claim Away Victory

MATCH REPORT – Stars Vs Basingstoke – 09/12/18

11th December 2018    Match,News

Straight off the back of the previous weekend’s loss to the Solent Devils down in their home area, Planet Ice Gosport, the Stars returned to winning ways by sinking the Basingstoke Buffalo in another away fixture. With a final score of Basingstoke 2 Oxford 3, the game had been tight throughout, and it wasn’t until the final period that the Stars finally pulled through.

At the end of the first 20 minutes, the scoreboard remained tied at zero. The only events that took part in the opening period were 2 penalties, one for Oxford and one for Basingstoke. Matthew Byrom sat in the box for 2 minutes off the back of a delaying the game penalty, without the Stars being able to take full advantage of the power play. For the Stars, Dax Hedges was given a minor penalty for cross checking to which the Buffalo too were unable to score with the man advantage.

The middle stanza saw both teams score their first goals of the evening. The Buffalo plugged hard for the initial face off of the period and scored the first goal of the night less than a minute later. From the efforts of goal scorer, Cameron Buckle, and goal assists from Liam Coleman and Samuel Brooks, the Buffalo clawed themselves into the lead. Between this first goal being netted and the Stars levelling the score, the Buffalo suffered one minor penalty while the Stars had to contend with 4 penalties. However, when they did eventually return to full strength, Conor Redmond tied the game up again with a lovely wrist shot past the Basingstoke net minder, with the assistance from Alex Staples having set up the pass from behind.

Heading into the third period, it was all to play for for both the Buffalo and the Stars. Oxford continued to spend a lot of time with a player in the penalty box, which didn’t help when they needed to use the final period to pull themselves into the lead. Despite this, the Stars scored 47 minutes into the game and raised their score to 2 goals to the one scored earlier in the evening by Basingstoke. This second goal for Oxford was scored by Tom Davis and Lee Richardson helped out with the assist. With the goal advantage already, the Stars consolidated their lead after Dom Hopkins sought hard to score on a shorthanded play. While Basingstoke were able to score a second goal, again from Cameron Buckle, with assists coming from Liam Coleman and Marcus Russell, they were unable to score again, leaving the Stars to end the night with a victory.
